Wilhelm von Gloeden
The Dreamer of Arcadia: Classical Aesthetics and Pioneer of the Photographic Nude in Taormina

This is the text of the Complete Entry
Introduction
Wilhelm von Gloeden (1856-1931) represents one of the most fascinating, complex, and pioneering figures in the history of photography at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A German aristocrat by birth, von Gloeden found in the small Sicilian town of Taormina not only a therapeutic refuge for his failing health but also a true open-air stage where he directed a personal, idealized vision of classical antiquity.
