Introduction

"Les Amoureux de la Bastille" (The Lovers of the Bastille), taken in 1957, represents one of the absolute zeniths of French humanist photography and is perhaps Willy Ronis's most celebrated masterpiece. The image captures a moment of tender, whispered intimacy between two young lovers overlooking a breathtaking panorama of Paris from the top of the July Column at Place de la Bastille.
