Introduction

Roy DeCarava a master who transcended the boundaries of documentary reportage to forge a deeply lyrical, intimate, and meditative visual language. In an era when photography was largely divided between action-oriented photojournalism and formal abstraction, DeCarava inaugurated a third path: a "humanist" photography, imbued with dignity and stripped of any victimizing rhetoric.
