Introduction
The image immortalizes a scene of extraordinary visual and ironic power: a Parisian policeman (gendarme), wrapped in his strict dark cape and wearing a traditional kepi, walks with a measured pace and an impassive gaze in front of the monumental and grotesque entrance of the former Cabaret de l'Enfer, located at 53 Boulevard de Clichy, in the Pigalle district of Paris.
