Introduction

Captured in 1955 by the renowned German-born photographer Peter Basch, the image immortalizes the actress Elizabeth Taylor during a break from the filming of the Hollywood epic "Giant," directed by George Stevens. The work radically departs from the glossy, hyper-controlled iconography promoted by the rigid "studio system" of the era's major film companies, offering the viewer a rare glimpse of vulnerability, naturalism, and psychological introspection.
