Introduction

This critical dossier examines an emblematic work by American photographer Joanne Mulberg, part of her celebrated series dedicated to the communities of Fire Island (The Pines and Cherry Grove) created between the late 1970s and the 1980s. Mulberg, an established master of color printing and an acute documentarian of Long Island's social and suburban landscape, found in Fire Island a microcosm of extraordinary expressive freedom.
