Introduction

Originally conceived as part of a photo essay commissioned by Life magazine titled The Restraints: Open and Hidden, the image belongs to the broader project known today as Segregation Story. Utilizing the medium of vibrant and groundbreaking color film, Gordon Parks was tasked with documenting the daily life of an extended African American family, the Thorntons, in the Deep South of the United States during the height of the Jim Crow era.
