Introduction
The image, raw and emotionally devastating, departs from the traditional canons of war reportage to embrace a profoundly phenomenological and existential visual language. Instead of depicting the blood, mangled bodies, or architectural destruction that characterized the siege of Sarajevo during the Yugoslav Wars, Gilles Peress chooses to focus on an intimate, claustrophobic, and synecdochic detail: a network of human hands pressed against the dirty, weather-beaten glass of a departing bus.
