Introduction
The image portrays a young girl, displaced by the Spanish Civil War and seeking refuge in France, caught in the intimate, primary act of feeding herself from a bowl. Fred Stein, himself an exile who fled the persecutions of the Nazi regime in Germany, employed the photographic medium not merely as a tool for objective recording, but as an empathetic bridge capable of transcending historical contingencies to become a universal symbol of violated childhood and statelessness.
