Introduction
The photographic work entitled "Obelisk," captured by James Francis "Frank" Hurley during the legendary Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917) led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, seizes a moment of extraordinary visual and narrative tension: a colossal shard of ice, thrust upward by the unquantifiable pressures of the Antarctic pack ice in the Weddell Sea, rises like a natural monument, an obelisk of both destruction and majesty.
