Introduction
Taken in 1953, this iconic image portrays the Australian bohemian artist, dancer, and muse Vali Myers inside an unadorned Parisian room. The work is not a mere portrait, but the visual and conceptual fulcrum around which revolves van der Elsken's publishing masterpiece, the "photo-novel" entitled Love on the Left Bank (Een Liefdesgeschiedenis in Saint Germain des Prés, published in 1956).
