Introduction

Van der Elsken, often referred to as the "enfant terrible" of Dutch photography for his raw, emotional, and nonconformist approach, eschews the classical celebration of the Olympic hero to focus instead on a voyeuristic and viscerally material vision of the athlete. Taken during the highly controversial 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, this image seizes the moment of the medal ceremony for weightlifting.
