Introduction
Long relegated by patriarchal historiography to the subordinate role of lover, tormented muse, and the iconic "Weeping Woman" (La Femme qui pleure) of Pablo Picasso, Henriette Theodora Markovitch, universally known by the pseudonym Dora Maar was in reality an absolute pioneer of surrealist photography, a socially acute photojournalist, and a politically engaged intellectual.
