Introduction

Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton (1904–1980) represents one of the most multifaceted, influential, and complex figures in the visual culture landscape of the twentieth century. Far from being merely a photographer, Beaton was a true "architect of the image," an absolute aesthete who successfully merged photography with fashion design, theatrical scenography, and illustration.
