Introduction

The artwork "What we saw upon awakening," conceived and executed in 2006, stands as one of the poetic and conceptual pinnacles of Afghan artist Lida Abdul's career. Originally created as a video installation shot on 16 mm film and subsequently transferred to DVD, the image under examination acts as a powerful film still that has acquired its own aesthetic and exhibition autonomy within the landscape of contemporary photography. The work presents a profound visual meditation on ruins, trauma, and memory in an Afghanistan devastated by decades of war.
