Introduction
Arnold Newman (1918 - 2006) stands as one of the most revolutionary figures in the history of twentieth-century photography. He is universally acknowledged as the pioneer, or at least the supreme formal codifier, of "environmental portraiture," a visual paradigm that dismantled the static and sanitized conventions of studio portraiture to embrace a narrative wherein physical space becomes the psychological and professional extension of the subject.
